I went to Alaska Tent & Tarp yesterday and we figured out how they're going to make a harness for me to use to pull my cart. I bought a weight-lifters belt and a pair of suspenders, and they're going to do the rest. I think it'll work out really well. They were intrigued and I was excited!
Plus I took my map of North & South America in to FedEx to get it laminated, and that turned out really well. It should be able to hold up to much use now...
While I was buying the weight-lifters belt, I also got a great pair of New Balance shoes on sale. Yep, it's starting to come together.

The Countdown
I'm still busy making plans for heading back out on the road in May. I keep going over all the gear I'll need to take with me, and how I'll load it all on the cart that I can either push, or hook up and pull. All my gear weighs around 80 lbs, and I don't want to carry that on my back. So I'll be using a cart to haul my stuff. Right now I'm trying to have a harness made to hook the cart up to. I think I'll use a weight-lifters belt, have a couple of eyelets connected to it to hook the cart up to, and have a pair of suspenders sewed on. I've already contacted Tent & Tarp in Fairbanks to help me concoct the harness, and they seemed eager to get started on it.
Other than that, I think I have most all of the gear that I'll need. The only other thing that I'm thinking of adding to my already heavy load is -- please don't laugh -- several pocket-size Bibles. For some reason, I can't get the thought out of my mind -- so I know I'm going to do it. But it's such an absurd idea! I mean I have to CARRY these! I have argued and debated, and yet I can't get rid of the thought. So I am resigned to the fact that I'll need to carry some of those with me, too. The whole idea is really quite crazy. I've never been a very good Christian example, and the only 3 things that I'm exceptionally good at are burping, farting and cussing, and yet I'm going to distribute Bibles on this walk? Really? Me??? Please! But again, sighhhh, I am resigned. I now need to figure out just how I'm going to pack these Bibles. I figure I'll put each one in a zip-lock baggie, and since I tend to get tongue-tied when I'm nervous, I figure I can write a personal note and mention my favorite Bible verses with each one, and quietly leave the Bibles behind as I go. (My friends are joking that the first town I encounter will receive all the Bibles I'm carrying!) I've found a website where I can order the Bibles, and will order a box full soon.
